In a bid to overcome historical antagonisms, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian announced a renewed commitment to strengthening ties between Iran and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This statement followed his meeting with Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Khaled bin Mohamed during the BRICS Summit in New Delhi. Pezeshkian characterized the dialogue as constructive, noting that both nations are eager to leave behind previous disputes and focus on future collaboration. The backdrop of these discussions is a region fraught with tension, as countries are increasingly eager to cooperate on issues of security and the safeguarding of vital shipping corridors.
On September 14, Iranian representatives are set to engage with officials from Gulf countries and Iraq in Oman to address regional security concerns, particularly those involving the Strait of Hormuz. The agenda aims at fostering better mutual understanding and bolstering collective security measures among the regional actors. Notably absent from these discussions will be Bahrain, which has opted out of participation.
During the summit, President Pezeshkian also advocated for stronger economic partnerships among BRICS nations. He emphasized the potential benefits of expanding the use of national currencies in bilateral trade and enhancing financial infrastructure to reduce reliance on established global financial systems. Pezeshkian argued that such dependence leaves emerging economies susceptible to external political and economic pressures.
In line with this, Pezeshkian called for BRICS members to reinforce economic resilience and cooperation, particularly in the face of unilateral sanctions and threats to civilian infrastructure. He underlined Iran’s strategic advantages, such as its energy reserves and transit networks, suggesting that the nation could play a pivotal role in developing trade and energy routes that connect BRICS economies.
