US Chip Stocks Fall Amid Inflation and AI-Related Debt Concerns

by admin477351

Investor concerns over persistent inflation and rising borrowing costs have triggered a decline in US semiconductor stocks, with major players like Nvidia and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) experiencing notable drops. On Thursday, Nvidia’s shares fell by 2% while AMD saw a 4% decrease, contributing to a broader sell-off in the chip sector.

Memory-chip manufacturers were not spared, as SanDisk’s shares plummeted 6%, following a 5% decline the day before. Other companies like Micron and South Korea’s SK Hynix also suffered losses amid growing competition from Chinese chipmakers, which further compounded the unease surrounding the semiconductor industry.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), the world’s largest contract chipmaker, witnessed a 4% drop in its shares despite reporting robust earnings and enjoying continued demand for AI chips. This decline underscores investor apprehensions about the overall market outlook, even as the demand for semiconductor technology remains strong.

The specter of inflation has fueled worries that the US Federal Reserve might maintain elevated interest rates for an extended period, thereby increasing financing costs for firms investing heavily in AI infrastructure. These higher borrowing costs could exert pressure on businesses reliant on debt to fund data centers and enhance computing capacity.

CoreWeave, an AI infrastructure provider, also came under selling pressure, with its shares falling by as much as 7% on Thursday after a previous session decline of over 16%. Rising bond yields have intensified concerns about the company’s debt-heavy balance sheet, reflecting broader investor scrutiny of the financial viability of AI-related investments.

The market downturn highlights the tension between strong demand for advanced chips and the economic uncertainties impacting technology stocks. As companies navigate the complexities of financing AI infrastructure amid inflationary pressures, investor sentiment remains cautious.
