In the wake of recent statements by U.S. President Donald Trump concerning the control of Greenland, Finnish leaders have clearly expressed their positions. Finnish President Alexander Stubb and Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen have firmly dismissed Trump’s suggestion that the United States should govern Greenland. Both leaders emphasized that the matter is exclusively for Denmark and Greenland to determine.
President Stubb, addressing the issue following Trump’s comments during the NATO summit, underscored the autonomy of Denmark and Greenland in such decisions. Foreign Minister Valtonen also reiterated Finland’s unwavering support for Denmark’s territorial integrity, affirming that any concerns related to the region should be resolved through existing collaborative defense frameworks.
Valtonen highlighted that Arctic security is best handled through current defense cooperation mechanisms rather than through territorial claims. She pointed out that Denmark and the United States are already engaged in discussions regarding defense cooperation, as NATO continues its initiatives to bolster security throughout the Arctic region.
Greenland, an autonomous territory under the Kingdom of Denmark, has become the focal point of renewed discussions among European allies regarding Arctic security, sovereignty, and regional stability following Trump’s remarks. These comments have sparked a broader debate about the geopolitical dynamics within the Arctic, an area of increasing strategic interest.
